(PatriotNews.net) – A Wisconsin sheriff is raising alarms about what he calls a crisis that could grow worse if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the presidency. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt shared his worries while testifying at a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Milwaukee, focusing on how border issues are affecting Wisconsin. Schmidt, who leads the Badger State Sheriffs Association, said crime is rising across the state, putting serious pressure on law enforcement resources.
“If Trump doesn’t win this election, we’re in trouble,” Schmidt said, quoting a fellow Wisconsin sheriff. Another sheriff, he added, expressed frustration, saying, “People don’t understand how bad it is.” Schmidt shared that his county, Dodge County, is now seeing a troubling increase in drug trafficking, especially from Mexican cartels. “I’m fearful for my family and for the families of those who serve with me,” he stated, describing the impact of cartel violence and drug flow into his area.
One specific issue Schmidt mentioned was the challenge law enforcement faces when pulling over drivers who don’t have proper licenses or ID. “I’d love to put a border around Dodge County, or even the whole state of Wisconsin,” Schmidt said, though he admitted that’s unrealistic. He stressed that federal action at the southern border is essential, noting the tragic fact that fentanyl overdoses kill around 1,500 people in Wisconsin each year.
During the hearing, Schmidt thanked Republican Senator Ron Johnson for attending. However, he voiced disappointment that Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin was absent, openly questioning her commitment to the issue.
Also speaking at the hearing was Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, who described how drug trafficking has worsened in his community. Fond du Lac, he explained, sits along key highways that traffickers use, turning it into a drug corridor. “We’re seizing record amounts of drugs,” Toney said, underscoring the scale of the problem.
Toney also pointed out that illegal immigration is straining local jails. With more illegal immigrants facing prosecution, jails are filling up, forcing counties to consider building new facilities. Both Trump and Wisconsin Senate candidate Eric Hovde have made border security a central part of their 2024 campaigns, emphasizing that national issues are hitting close to home in Wisconsin.
