Workplace Affair Destroys Two Mormon Families
On March 11, 2011, what began as a professional relationship between attorney Emmett Corrigan and paralegal Kandi Hall escalated into a deadly confrontation that left two families destroyed. Corrigan, a 30-year-old father building his bankruptcy practice in Meridian, Idaho, hired 40-year-old Kandi as his paralegal in November 2010. Within weeks, their working relationship turned into an illicit affair that would cost Corrigan his life and tear apart the conservative Mormon community values both families once shared.
The affair unfolded while Corrigan’s wife Ashlee was pregnant with their fifth child, forcing her to attend prenatal appointments alone as her husband claimed dedication to providing family income. Meanwhile, Kandi’s husband Rob, after 19 years of marriage and two teenage daughters, discovered the betrayal months before the fatal confrontation. The workplace romance that began with long hours and professional collaboration transformed into a betrayal that violated the fundamental family values both couples had previously upheld.
Fatal Confrontation in Parking Lot
The day of the shooting began with both spouses confronting their unfaithful partners about the ongoing affair. After work confrontations by both Ashlee and Rob, Emmett and Kandi arranged to meet at a Walgreens parking lot. Security surveillance captured them driving off together for a sexual encounter before returning to the lot, where Rob Hall waited armed and determined to eliminate his wife’s lover once and for all.
Prosecutor Jason Spillman argued that Hall deliberately armed himself to confront Corrigan in what became premeditated murder. The confrontation escalated when Corrigan reportedly taunted Hall, saying “Your family? I hate your family,” according to testimony from Kandi Hall. The verbal confrontation turned physical, resulting in Hall shooting Corrigan in the head and chest. Hall also sustained a graze wound to his own head, later claiming amnesia about the incident’s details.
Justice Served Despite Amnesia Defense
Robert Hall’s defense strategy centered on his claimed amnesia from the self-inflicted head wound, arguing he couldn’t recall the shooting or form intent to commit murder. However, forensic evidence proved decisive in securing his conviction. Gunshot residue and DNA evidence found solely on Hall, combined with witness testimony and surveillance footage, painted a clear picture of premeditated confrontation despite the amnesia claims.
In 2012, a jury convicted Hall of second-degree murder, rejecting the amnesia defense and sentencing him to 17.5 years in prison. The case highlighted how personal vengeance, while understandable given the betrayal, cannot justify taking the law into one’s own hands. Hall’s conviction upheld the principle that marital betrayal, however painful, doesn’t warrant deadly vigilante justice in our legal system.
