Mitzi Gaynor, Star of South Pacific, Dies at 93

(PatriotNews.net) – Mitzi Gaynor, the beloved actress known for her role in South Pacific and her work with Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, has passed away at the age of 93.

Gaynor’s management team announced her death on social media Thursday morning, stating that she died of natural causes.

“For eight decades she entertained audiences in films, on television, and on stage,” the statement read. “She truly enjoyed every moment of her professional career and was honored to be an entertainer.”

Gaynor is best remembered for playing Nellie Forbush, a U.S. Navy nurse, in the 1958 film South Pacific. Her performance of the song “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair” became iconic.

Throughout her career, Gaynor built a strong filmography, appearing alongside major stars of her time. She acted with Bing Crosby in Anything Goes (1956), Frank Sinatra in The Joker Is Wild (1957), and Gene Kelly in Les Girls (1957). In We’re Not Married! (1952), she shared the screen with Zsa Zsa Gabor and Marilyn Monroe. Gaynor later reunited with Monroe for the 1954 musical There’s No Business Like Show Business.

Her talents went beyond film, as Gaynor also headlined several popular TV specials on CBS. These performances showcased her lively personality and singing ability, further cementing her place in entertainment history.

In their statement, Gaynor’s management team described her as more than just a star. “Off stage, she was vibrant and extraordinary—a caring friend, a warm and funny soul, and a great cook, too!” they said.

“As we reflect on her incredible legacy, we thank her fans and friends for the love and support they gave her over the years,” the team added. “That love was a gift that carried her through life. She often said her audience was ‘the sunshine of my life.’ And you truly were.”
