Josh Hawley, R-Mo., recently shared alarming claims from whistleblowers about the lack of preparation by the Secret Service to protect political figures, including former President Trump. These claims focus on inadequate training provided to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents reassigned to help with protective duties. According to Hawley, the agents received only a two-hour webinar on Microsoft Teams as their sole training.
Hawley explained these concerns during an appearance on Jesse Watters Primetime, describing how the webinar was full of technical issues. One whistleblower revealed that hundreds of agents were asked to log in individually, but the session was plagued by problems. The instructor struggled to get the audio working, and the videos had to be restarted multiple times. The videos themselves, according to the whistleblowers, were outdated and unhelpful, with no changes made since the assassination attempt on Trump.
The Secret Service responded to these accusations by stating they are working to improve. They said they respect oversight and have already provided over 1,500 pages of documents to Congress. They also mentioned they are committed to learning from this incident to ensure it never happens again.
Despite these promises, the whistleblowers painted a troubling picture. They stated that nothing has been updated since the July 13 assassination attempt, when Thomas Matthew Crooks accessed a rooftop with an AR-15 rifle during a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. Agents who were there said their only training was a PowerPoint presentation. Hawley’s office also reported that the lead security agent for the event was known to be inexperienced and didn’t follow proper security protocols.
Hawley strongly criticized the government for what he called a “nightmare” situation. He emphasized that without the whistleblowers coming forward, the public might never have known about these failures.
The senator vowed to continue pressing for accountability, calling the security failures unacceptable.
