A 17-year-old badminton player from China named Zhang Zhijie suddenly collapsed and died during a match in Indonesia, officials said on Monday.
Zhang was playing against a Japanese opponent when he fell and started having seizures at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships on Sunday, according to ABC News.
The Indonesia Badminton Association said Zhang was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital, but he died of cardiac arrest.
“The examination and treatment results at both hospitals showed that Zhang experienced sudden cardiac arrest,” said Broto Happy, a spokesperson for the Indonesia Badminton Association.
After Zhang’s collapse, his fellow competitors held a moment of silence to honor him as the tournament continued.
“We are deeply saddened by Zhang Zhijie’s sudden death during an international competition,” the organization said in a statement. “We are very thankful to everyone who showed concern and offered help. We will do everything we can to support Zhang Zhijie’s family.”
