Prosecutor Opts Out of Charging Colombian Migrant for Teen’s Death

(PatriotNews.net) – In a recent controversial decision, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has chosen not to charge a Colombian migrant in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old girl in Chicago. The incident took place earlier this month, and while police believe the migrant, 19-year-old Juan David Ramirez-Olivo, was involved, Foxx’s office claims there isn’t enough evidence to pursue charges.

According to a source from the Chicago Police Department (CPD), Ramirez-Olivo’s illegally acquired gun went off inside an apartment, killing a girl named Stephanie Ramirez. The weapon had been purchased on the street, something no one considers legal, and yet, the Cook County prosecutor refused to push for charges, which has caused significant outrage.

Initially, police arrested Ramirez-Olivo on suspicion of murder. When questioned, he lied about his nationality, claiming to be from Venezuela, though he is, in fact, from Colombia. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that he had previously entered the U.S. under a parole program and was expected to appear in court for that matter.

Despite his arrest and an ICE detainer placed on him, Foxx’s office decided not to pursue even involuntary manslaughter charges. CPD officials and the police chief involved were not pleased with this decision, pushing for Ramirez-Olivo to face consequences for his actions. A source within CPD noted, “Even if it was an accident, how can you not charge him for owning an illegal weapon?

On the day of the shooting, Ramirez-Olivo and the victim were in the same apartment when the gun went off, striking Stephanie in the arm. She tragically died from her injuries.

In response to the criticism, Foxx’s office issued a statement saying, “We have a duty to only charge when the evidence supports it. Right now, it doesn’t.” However, they are open to reviewing any new evidence that might emerge.

Many remain upset by the lack of action, especially given Ramirez-Olivo’s past arrest for carrying a deadly weapon. For now, the case remains unresolved.
