(PatriotNews.net) – Eugene “Mercury” Morris, the legendary running back who helped lead the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories and an undefeated 1972 season, has died at the age of 77. The Dolphins announced the news on Sunday, and his family shared a heartfelt statement, saying, “His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport.”
Morris was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and played a key role in the Dolphins’ historic 1972 and 1973 seasons, where the team won back-to-back championships. He was part of a powerful backfield with Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, rushing for 1,000 yards in the undefeated 1972 season and leading the team in rushing touchdowns for two years straight.
Beyond football, Morris was a beloved figure in the Miami community. His family noted, “Mercury was more than a football star—he was a devoted father, a loving brother, and a loyal friend.”
Morris often reflected on the impact that legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula had on the team. In a 2008 interview, Morris explained, “Shula gave us a sense of direction and purpose. He showed us that if you work hard and do what’s necessary, good things will happen.” That work ethic contributed to the Dolphins’ perfect 17-0 season in 1972, a feat that no other NFL team has matched to this day.
Morris took pride in the Dolphins’ achievement, but he was quick to clarify rumors. Despite popular belief, he said, “We do not toast every time an unbeaten team loses.” With his signature humor, he added, “There’s no champagne in my glass, only Canada Dry Ginger ale!”
However, Morris’s life wasn’t without challenges. After his football career, he faced legal troubles and was convicted of cocaine trafficking in 1982. He always maintained that he used, but never sold, the drug. His conviction was overturned in 1986, and Morris later became a motivational speaker, encouraging others to avoid the pitfalls he had faced.
In 2013, Morris was inducted into the Dolphins’ Walk of Fame, cementing his legacy. He remains fourth on the team’s all-time rushing list, and his contributions to the game and the community will be remembered for years to come.
