Mafia Member on Death Row Killed by Inmates in Prison

(PatriotNews.net) – A death row inmate in Southern California was beaten to death by three fellow prisoners, according to state officials. The incident happened at Calipatria State Prison, located in Imperial County.

The inmate, Alberto Martinez, died on Thursday after being attacked by another prisoner, Tyler A. Lua. According to reports from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Lua was seen hitting Martinez and knocking him to the ground. Once Martinez was down, two more inmates, Jorge D. Negrete-Larios and Luis J. Beltran, joined in and continued beating him while he lay motionless.

Prison staff eventually stopped the attack using pepper spray and a baton. They found two weapons that were made by inmates at the scene. Despite efforts to save his life, Martinez was pronounced dead later that day.

The three inmates who took part in the attack have been moved to a restricted area while the investigation continues. Authorities say that the death is being treated as a homicide.

Martinez, 46, had been in prison since 2010. He was on death row for first-degree murder and also received life in prison for attempted murder, related to street gang activity. The Orange County Register reported that the plot had been set up by the victim’s sister.

Additionally, Martinez was involved with the Mexican mafia and even orchestrated other murders while on death row. Reports suggest he used a banned cellphone to communicate with someone in Mexico.

As for the attackers, Lua, 25, was serving 19 years for attempted murder, Negrete-Larios, 33, was in for 32 years on various charges, including gang activity, and Beltran, 31, had a life sentence without parole for murder.

Currently, there are 623 inmates on death row in California. However, executions have been on hold since 2019, when Governor Gavin Newsom issued a moratorium on the death penalty. The last execution took place in 2006.
