(PatriotNews.net) – A tragic accident in Little Rock, Arkansas has left a community mourning the loss of 48-year-old Jennifer Ann Morton. The man accused of causing her death, Maynor Yair Sorto-Herrera, is an illegal immigrant from Honduras.
Sorto-Herrera, 30 years old, faces a long list of charges. These include negligent homicide, driving under the influence, battery, reckless driving, carrying a concealed weapon, and driving without a license. According to police, on September 8, Sorto-Herrera was driving southbound when he swerved into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into Morton’s car.
Officers who arrived at the scene found Sorto-Herrera attempting to flee. He was taken into custody on the spot.
Morton, a long-time resident of Little Rock, worked for over two decades at Arkansas Children’s Hospital as a respiratory therapist. Her obituary described her as passionate about caring for children. She is survived by her parents, brother, two nephews, and other family members.
Sorto-Herrera’s immigration history reveals that he first entered the U.S. illegally in October 2018 near Laredo, Texas. Border Patrol agents caught him and sent him back to Honduras the following month. However, at some point later, he crossed the U.S.-Mexico border again without being detected.
Currently, Sorto-Herrera remains in custody at Pulaski County Detention Center. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on him, which means if he is released from jail, ICE will take him into their custody.
This case is yet another example of the chaos caused by poor border enforcement. Morton’s death highlights the risks posed when people enter the country illegally and remain undetected. The grief her family is experiencing could have been avoided if Sorto-Herrera had not slipped through the cracks.
While the justice system will now take its course, the question remains: how many more innocent lives will be lost before stronger action is taken to secure our borders?
