(PatriotNews.net) – Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, has decided not to join a group of Democratic governors forming a coalition to push back against President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. Known as Governors Safeguarding Democracy, the organization was recently launched by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
Healey’s office confirmed she will not be part of the initiative, according to a report by The Boston Globe. While the group describes itself as a nonpartisan effort to protect “state-level institutions of democracy,” Healey has chosen to focus on existing tools for safeguarding state rights, such as the offices of state attorneys general.
Healey, who built much of her political career battling Trump during his presidency, has made it clear she intends to govern for all residents of Massachusetts—including the 37 percent who voted for Trump in the recent election.
The Governors Safeguarding Democracy group plans to pool resources and influence to counter any perceived threats to state authority from the federal government. It is also collaborating with another organization, Governors Action Alliance. This group includes notable figures with ties to Massachusetts, such as former Democratic Governor Deval Patrick and former Republican Governor William Weld, both of whom serve on its advisory board.
Funding for these efforts will reportedly come from private donations. Governor Pritzker, a billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, has described these donations as “philanthropic.” However, it remains unclear whether other high-profile Democratic leaders, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been called a leader of the “resistance” movement, will join the effort.
Healey’s approach reflects her broader goals as governor. Instead of aligning herself with specific resistance groups, she has emphasized working within existing institutions to protect the rights of Massachusetts residents. Her decision signals a focus on collaboration and unity, even as the political climate remains deeply divided.
As Trump prepares to take office, the role of state leaders in shaping policy and defending local interests will undoubtedly come under greater scrutiny. Healey’s choice to stay independent may set her apart from her peers, but it also underscores her commitment to representing all her constituents, regardless of political affiliation.
