(PatriotNews.net) – The Minnesota Republican Party and the Republican National Committee (RNC) are calling for an investigation after a noncitizen reported receiving a primary ballot in the mail without ever registering to vote. This noncitizen, who is legally living in Minnesota, claims he never asked for the ballot and worries this could affect his future chances of becoming a citizen.
Kevin Cline, who works on election integrity for the RNC, and David Hann, who leads the Minnesota GOP, sent a letter to Minnesota’s Secretary of State, Steven Simon. In this letter, they demanded a thorough review of the voter rolls to ensure that only eligible citizens are registered and receiving ballots. They also called for an immediate investigation and a solution to the issue.
The controversy arises partly from a law passed in March 2023, known as “Drivers Licenses For All.” Signed by Democratic Governor Tim Walz, who is now Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, this law allows all state residents, no matter their immigration status, to get a driver’s license. The governor argued that this law would make Minnesota safer, as it would allow approximately 81,000 undocumented immigrants to get licenses.
However, Republicans are concerned that the law could lead to noncitizens accidentally being registered to vote. They pointed out that county election officials rely on the State Voter Registration System (SVRS) to verify if someone is eligible to vote. They questioned whether the SVRS is capable of handling the recent changes in Minnesota law, especially with people who are automatically registered when they interact with state agencies.
In their letter, Cline and Hann suggested that the case of the noncitizen receiving a ballot might show a serious flaw in the voter registration system. They also raised concerns about the staff responsible for ensuring only eligible voters are registered. They requested that Secretary Simon’s office review all voter registrations to ensure that only American citizens are on the voter rolls.
The letter gave Secretary Simon a deadline to respond and provide information about how his office ensures that noncitizens are not mistakenly registered to vote or sent ballots. The Republicans demanded a prompt investigation and full transparency to maintain trust in Minnesota’s elections.
