Biden’s Eleventh Hour Decision Sparks Outrage
In a move that has set the law enforcement community ablaze with anger, former President Joe Biden decided to commute the sentence of Leonard Peltier, a man convicted of murdering two FBI agents. This last-minute decision, made as Biden was leaving office, has been met with fierce criticism from the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) and former FBI Director Christopher Wray. The commutation allows Peltier, now 80 years old, to serve the remainder of his sentence in home confinement, effectively releasing him from prison after nearly five decades behind bars.
A Slap in the Face to Law Enforcement
The FBIAA didn’t mince words in their response to Biden’s decision. They called it a “last-second, disgraceful act” that betrays the families of the fallen agents and disrespects law enforcement as a whole. It’s hard to fathom how Biden could justify this decision, especially given the brutal nature of the crimes Peltier was convicted of committing.
“It is a cruel betrayal to the families and colleagues of these fallen Agents and is a slap in the face of law enforcement” – FBIAA.
The audacity of Biden’s administration to prioritize the comfort of a convicted cop killer over the justice deserved by the victims’ families is truly mind-boggling. This decision sends a chilling message to those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities: your sacrifice might be forgotten or disregarded for political gain.
A History of Violence and Lack of Remorse
Peltier’s history is not one that screams “worthy of clemency.” After his conviction for the murders of FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams, Peltier escaped from federal prison in 1979, adding five years to his sentence. Even more disturbing is the fact that, according to the FBIAA, Peltier has never shown remorse for his actions. How can we justify releasing someone who not only took the lives of two law enforcement officers but has never expressed regret for doing so?
“Peltier is a remorseless killer, who brutally murdered two of our own–Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams. Granting Peltier any relief from his conviction or sentence is wholly unjustified and would be an affront to the rule of law.” – Wray.
Former FBI Director Christopher Wray’s warning to Biden fell on deaf ears. Wray emphasized that this commutation would be “shattering to the victims’ loved ones and undermine the principles of justice and accountability that our government should represent.” It’s clear that Biden’s administration has chosen to prioritize political posturing over the very principles of justice they claim to uphold.
