(PatriotNews.net) – Ethel Kennedy, a well-known human rights advocate and widow of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 96. She died on Thursday after suffering a stroke last week, according to her family.
Her grandson, Joe Kennedy III, shared the news on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “With love in our hearts, we announce the passing of our incredible grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She passed this morning due to complications from a stroke.” Along with her lifetime of work in human rights and social justice, she leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her deeply,” Joe Kennedy said.
He also mentioned her deep Catholic faith, saying the family takes comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her late husband, Robert F. Kennedy, and other family members who passed before her, including two of her sons, David and Michael, and several grandchildren.
Ethel Kennedy was born Ethel Skakel on April 11, 1928, in Chicago. She experienced tragedy early in life, as both of her parents died in a plane crash in 1955. Then, in 1968, she was by Robert F. Kennedy’s side when he was assassinated while running for president. This came just five years after her brother-in-law, President John F. Kennedy, was also assassinated in Dallas.
Despite these heartbreaking events, Ethel Kennedy spent her life advocating for social justice and human rights. She was the mother of 11 children, including Kathleen, Joseph II, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Max, Douglas, and Rory Kennedy.
In 2019, she faced another loss when her granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill died from a drug overdose.
Ethel Kennedy’s family said she had recently been surrounded by loved ones before falling ill. She was one of the last surviving members of the Kennedy family that shaped much of American history in the 20th century.
