(PatriotNews.net) – The Department of Justice (DOJ) is removing Jack Smith from his role as special counsel and ending his two federal investigations into President-elect Donald Trump. This decision follows Trump’s sweeping win in Tuesday’s election. Fox News reported that the DOJ’s decision to remove Smith is based on the fact that they cannot prosecute a sitting president. According to the report, Smith will step down before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025.
The DOJ’s move means both of Smith’s criminal cases against Trump will be dropped. One case, which dealt with Trump’s handling of classified documents after he left office, had already been dismissed by a judge in Florida. However, Smith was working on appealing that ruling before the DOJ decided to shut down the investigation.
Smith’s second case was focused on Trump’s actions following the 2020 presidential election. This investigation looked at whether Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results could have broken any laws. With Trump now elected again, this case will also be put to rest, following the DOJ’s decision to end both probes.
Smith’s departure and the DOJ’s decision mark a significant shift. By stopping these cases, the DOJ is acknowledging that pursuing these matters further would be challenging, especially with Trump preparing to step back into the White House.
