Alabama’s Latest Attack on Common Sense and Human Decency
In a move that has left many of us wondering if we’ve time-traveled back to the 1950s, Alabama’s legislature has decided to play God and redefine gender. Because apparently, they didn’t have enough on their plate with actual problems like poverty, education, or infrastructure. No, they needed to make sure everyone knows exactly what’s in your pants before you can use a public restroom.
The aptly named “What is a Woman Act” – because clearly, that’s the burning question keeping Alabamians up at night – passed with a resounding 77-12 vote. It’s almost as if they were voting on whether water is wet or the sky is blue. But no, they were deciding on the fundamental rights and identities of countless individuals.
Governor Ivey’s Misguided Crusade
Governor Kay Ivey, apparently channeling her inner biology textbook from 1952, couldn’t wait to sign this gem into law. She proudly declared, “If the Good Lord made you a boy, you’re a boy. And if He made you a girl, you’re a girl. In Alabama, we believe there are two genders: Male and female. There is nothing complicated or controversial about it.”

Well, Governor, I hate to break it to you, but biology, like life, is a tad more complicated than your simplistic view. But why let science, compassion, or the lived experiences of thousands of Alabamians get in the way of a good old-fashioned dose of discrimination?
The Real Victims of This Legislative Farce
While Ivey and her cronies pat themselves on the back for “codifying common sense,” the real victims of this legislative farce are the transgender and intersex individuals who now find their very existence questioned by the state. As A’Niya Robinson poignantly stated, “It is impossible to erase who someone is and it is anything but common sense to pretend that they do not exist.”

But hey, who needs human rights when you’ve got “clarity, certainty, and uniformity in the courts,” right? Because that’s clearly more important than the mental health and well-being of actual human beings. Bravo, Alabama. You’ve truly outdone yourself this time.
