(PatriotNews.net) – Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton is facing criticism from fellow Democrats after he expressed his concerns about transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s sports. In an interview with The New York Times, Moulton explained that, as a father of two daughters, he worries about fairness and safety in female sports, saying he feels Democrats often avoid addressing real concerns.
“I have two little girls. I don’t want them being run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete,” Moulton said. “But as a Democrat, I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.” He went on to argue that Democrats lost some support in the 2024 election because the party sometimes dismisses concerns that many Americans share, adding that the party should be open to debating these issues.
Moulton’s statement led to immediate pushback from members of his own party. Massachusetts State Rep. Manny Cruz called Moulton’s comments “a betrayal” and suggested he had shifted his values. Cruz criticized Moulton for “scapegoating” transgender youth for the Democratic Party’s recent losses, noting that Moulton had previously committed to standing up for LGBTQ rights.
Others went further. Massachusetts State Senator Jamie Eldridge urged Democrats in the state to avoid following Moulton’s lead, emphasizing that Democratic values should remain consistent. Salem City Councilor Kyle Davis even demanded Moulton’s resignation, saying an apology wouldn’t be enough to mend the damage.
Moulton is not alone in this stance, though. Some Democrats have also started speaking out on this issue. New York Representative Tom Suozzi voiced similar concerns in the same New York Times article, warning that Democrats shouldn’t pander to the far left on issues like sports. Suozzi argued that the party should be able to discuss who competes in women’s sports without compromising on civil rights.
In recent months, other Democrats, including Texas Representatives Colin Allred and Vicente Gonzalez, have distanced themselves from blanket support for transgender athletes in female sports. They argue that biological differences can make the competition unfair.
The Biden-Harris administration’s stance on transgender athletes, which interprets Title IX to protect gender identity, has also fueled debate. This policy shift has been controversial, with some arguing it may lead to more biological males competing in female sports leagues. Public polls show most Americans are skeptical about transgender athletes competing based on gender identity rather than biological sex.
With such strong opinions on both sides, this issue seems unlikely to fade soon, especially with leaders and voters split over what’s fair in sports.
