Trump Ally Secures GOP Primary Victory After District Switch

Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, a big supporter of former President Donald Trump, won a Republican primary after switching districts to run for the seat of retired GOP Rep. Ken Buck. Buck was a critic of Trump, so Boebert’s win was celebrated by Trump and his supporters.

Boebert dominated the race, getting 43% of the vote. The next highest was former state Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, who only got 14%. The 4th District seat was open after Rep. Buck retired. Trump had criticized Buck for not supporting his claims that the 2020 election was stolen, and he called Buck’s retirement “a great thing for the Republican Party.”

Trump praised Boebert’s victory in a post on Truth Social. He noted that Boebert had his endorsement.

Boebert has had her share of controversies. Last year, she was kicked out of a theater after people complained she and her boyfriend were causing a disturbance. She also faced accusations of “carpetbagging” when she decided to run in the 4th District while still serving in the 3rd District, a seat she has held since 2021.

At her victory party, Boebert wore a white “Make America Great Again” hat and a pair of Trump’s gold sneakers. “A lot of folks criticize my approach on things, but I learned very early on in Washington, D.C., that nothing happens without force,” she said.

Boebert has been in the news for various reasons over the past six months. In January, her ex-husband was arrested on charges including alleged assault of their son. Weeks later, her son, Tyler, was arrested on numerous felony and misdemeanor charges. Then in April, Boebert announced she had been diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, a rare condition affecting a vein in the pelvis. She underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

Boebert barely won against Democratic candidate Adam Frisch in 2022 by just 546 votes. However, Colorado’s 4th Congressional District is more reliably Republican than the 3rd District, giving Boebert a strong advantage in the upcoming election against Democrat Trisha Calvarese, who won her party’s nomination.
