(PatriotNews.net) – At a recent rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump called on his supporters to “forgive” President Joe Biden after Biden reportedly referred to Trump’s supporters as “garbage.” The comment stirred controversy, reminding many of Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” comment during the 2016 election.
During his speech, Trump took the high road, telling the crowd, “Garbage, I think, is even worse than deplorables, but he doesn’t know. You have to please forgive him.” Trump urged his supporters not to hold grudges and joked that Biden might even like him more than Vice President Kamala Harris. “Please forgive him for not knowing what he said,” Trump added, implying that Biden might not have meant it as harshly as it sounded.
The controversy started after Biden’s remarks during a campaign call aimed at energizing Latino voters. Referring to recent rhetoric at one of Trump’s events, Biden stated, “The only garbage I see out there are his supporters,” suggesting Trump’s campaign had crossed the line in its approach. Biden also accused Trump of spreading “un-American” messages about Latinos, something Biden said was against “everything we’ve been as a country.”
Trump’s rally came just after a major event held by Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C. Shortly after Biden’s remarks sparked backlash, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) to clarify, stating, “Earlier today, I referred to hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico from Trump’s supporters as garbage.” Biden’s comments were reportedly in reference to a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who at a recent Trump rally had made an unflattering remark about Puerto Rico.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates later clarified that Biden’s comment wasn’t aimed at all Trump supporters but specifically at “hateful rhetoric” heard at the rally. Bates explained that Biden was speaking about Hinchcliffe’s joke, which had upset some listeners. According to the White House, Biden’s response was meant to emphasize the importance of respecting all communities, including Puerto Ricans.
In a rare show of unity, Trump’s response surprised some, as he turned Biden’s harsh words into a call for forgiveness. Whether Biden’s words were a misstep or part of a broader strategy, Trump used the moment to rally his base while promoting forgiveness, suggesting that unity is still possible in American politics.
