According to these top Republican leaders, Harris’s recent words are not just unhelpful; they could be putting lives in danger.
In a joint statement, Johnson and McConnell accused Harris of using “irresponsible rhetoric that endangers both American lives and institutions.” This rare team-up highlights just how serious they believe the situation has become. They also criticized President Joe Biden, saying he and Harris have failed to follow through on their promises to lower the temperature in American politics after recent incidents targeting Trump.
“This summer, after the first attempted assassination of a presidential candidate in over a century, President Biden said that ‘we can’t allow this violence to be normalized,’” they pointed out. And in September, after yet another close call for Trump, Harris herself stated that “we all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence.” But Johnson and McConnell feel these words ring hollow, considering Harris’s recent comments.
The two GOP leaders argue that rather than helping calm things down, Harris has only made matters worse. They describe her recent speeches as “fanning the flames” of political division, even comparing her words to the kind of language that Trump’s alleged second would-be assassin used. This suspect reportedly wrote a chilling note before his capture, urging others to “finish the job.”
Meanwhile, Harris has continued to call Trump a “fascist” as he climbs in the polls, especially in key swing states. Johnson and McConnell see this kind of language as especially reckless, warning that it could spark more violence at a time when tensions are already high.
