(PatriotNews.net) – Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr criticized the Biden-Harris Department of Justice on Monday for publicly releasing a letter written by a man accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Barr argued that sharing the letter could only lead to more incitement against Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) released the letter as part of court documents to argue that the suspect, Ryan Routh, should stay in pretrial detention. A judge later agreed, denying Routh bond on Monday.
The letter, written months before the assassination attempt, was found in a box of Routh’s belongings. In it, Routh admitted his failed attempt to kill Trump. “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” Routh wrote. He also offered a $150,000 reward to anyone who could finish the job, calling on others to take action.
Barr expressed shock that the DOJ didn’t censor any part of the letter before making it public. “I was dumbfounded that the DOJ made public the contents of the letter,” Barr said in a statement. He explained that the letter not only detailed the assassination attempt but also called for more violence. “There was no apparent justification for releasing this information at this stage.”
Barr emphasized that the DOJ had plenty of evidence to keep Routh locked up without the need to share the letter’s contents. He suggested that, if necessary, the DOJ could have redacted the inflammatory parts or kept the letter sealed from the public.
He went on to say that releasing the letter was especially irresponsible during an election season, as Trump had already faced two assassination attempts. Barr concluded that the letter’s release had “no purpose other than to risk inciting further violence.”
Routh, who has a criminal history that prevents him from owning guns, had donated to several Democrat candidates in 2019-2020 through the fundraising platform ActBlue.
